The Texture of Memories
What started as a personal endeavor of photographing my father’s old Urdu books turned into a larger photoscape. I started collecting old Urdu books that are no longer in circulation – such as Russian translations, Hindi-Urdu crossovers, detective novels, erotic pocket books and cookbooks – with complex sociological layers embedded in the pages. Small notes, verses, doodles, scribbles and dedications are all emblems of personal histories, time, desires and memories. They also signify the usual aging of paper objects; bought and sold, with exchanged ownerships as they fade and disappear with time.
These photographs are part of an ongoing project - an effort to reconnect with the pages that shaped my imagination, passions and politics.
